The Salzburg and Salzkammergut Chest of Treasures

The Salzkammergut Lake District is rich in churches and monasteries, castles and palaces. Art and culture accompany you every step of the way. The burning question is: what is planned for today?

We have chosen a few of the most important sights and places of interest for you, the staff at the reception of the Hotel Mohrenwirt in Fuschl am See have many tips and ideas for you!

The City of Salzburg

Obviously, the most important excursion destination is the City of Salzburg. It’s worth taking a whole day to explore this beautiful city on the banks of the Salzach river, to take in the sights and sounds and soak up the very special atmosphere. You are sure to return!

Kaiservilla Bad Ischl

Kaiser Franz Josef came to the town of Bad Ischl every summer. The Kaiser’s former residence can be visited and in the grounds you will also find the Marble Castle with its photo museum. Wander through the streets and enjoy the very different flair of the “Kaiser Town” of Bad Ischl.

Salt Mines in Hallstatt

The small village of Hallstatt is squeezed between the steep mountain slopes and the lake. Visit the salt mines here, probably the oldest mine ever to be open to the public. The salt mine or Salzbergwerk has always played an important part in the long and interesting history of Hallstatt and its settlers. This is where the famous “Man in Salt” who, it is presumed, was killed in a landslide approx. 400 BC. and was buried and conserved in salt until he was discovered in 1734. During archaeological digs, which began in 1846, the remains of prehistoric settlements were found on an Iron Age burial ground. These revealing finds are why this period, 800-500 BC, is known as the “Hallstattzeit” or Hallstatt Age”.

Wolfgang Lake and St. Wolfgang

Ralph Bernatzky’s Operetta The White Horse Inn (Das Weiße Rössl am Wolfgangsee) made this pretty little village famous over night. And not without reason: St. Wolfgang lies in a picturesque setting on the south side of the lake. The best way to get there is to walk over the pilgrims way from St. Gilgen or by boat. The legends surrounding Saint Wolfgang culminate in the village parish church, a beautiful sacred building that was the Christian world’s fourth largest place of pilgrimage in the 15th and 16th Century. A real “must” is the Schafberg Cog-Railway ride to the top of the Schafberg mountain, where a fantastic view of the Wolfgang Lake and the Salzkammergut awaits you.

Dachstein Ice Caves

A frosty but fascinating experience! The Dachstein Ice Caves came into being during the development and folding of the Alps, whereby clefts and ridges were created. Over the centuries water washed away the rock leaving behind the huge palace-like ice halls with walls of ice, glacier caves, ice chapels, mountains of ice and frozen waterfalls that can be visited and marvelled at today. The Ice Caves were discovered in 1897 by Peter Gamsjäger, a shepherd who was looking for a lost goat and who took refuge from a storm in a cave. Only in 1920 were explorers able to reach the inner part of the caves, which are now known to be the largest in Austria. The caves are protected by a conservation order and offer a spectacular day out for visitors to the Dachstein massif.
