Salzburg

Queen of the Sights in Salzburg

With its 150,000 inhabitants, Salzburg is a small city. The location is however unique: In the shelter of the mystic Untersberg massif and the mountain ranges to the south of the city, the Hohensalzburg Fortress stands on a steep hill dominating the city’s skyline. Awe inspiring, it reigns over the baroque city with its many towers, domes, impressive squares and narrow lanes. Southern flair and the language of music gives the city an inimitable charisma. During the Salzburg Festival the city is elevated to an internationally important music capital of the world.

History and Tales of Salzburg

There is something very special about Salzburg. People have been settling in the Salzburg basin and along the banks of the Salzach river since primitive times. Salt mining ensured prosperity and gave the town, the county and the river its name. Through the centuries the area around the township of Salzburg was populated by Celts, Romans and Bohemians. It was the Romans that gave the town the name “Juvavum”. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was the church that stepped into the breach: Bishop Rupert aus Worms, the county’s patron, built the original monastery of St. Peter and started to rebuild the town and so paved the way for a new and prosperous era.

Up until 1803 Salzburg was an independent sovereign archbishopric, whose ruler was both Prince and Archbishop. Salzburg did not belong to Austria or Bavaria! The town was thrown into chaos by the disbandment of the archbishopric and only then, after much wrangling, did the town and the county of Salzburg become part of Austria.

Salzburg – City of Art and Culture

The rulers of the city, the Prince Archbishops, were well-educated and very interested in the Arts, they were often widly-travelled and kings and Kaisers were often their hosts. They also held court themselves: in the splendid “Residenz” in Salzburg’s Old Town, in the impressive Cathedral or “Dom” or in their noble summer residence Hellbrunn Palace. They collected art from all over the civilized world and promoted and supported the Arts in the County and the City of Salzburg. The goldmines in the Innergebirg region procured them enormous wealth. Even today we can still take pleasure in their efforts: fabulous buildings from every era, palaces, and fortresses in the city and in the county, galleries and art collections.

Salzburg – Traditional and Modern

Salzburg doesn’t simply wallow in its great past, it actively promotes trendsetting, modern projects such as the building of the Museum der Moderne – the Modern Arts Museum and in so doing sends a very strong and future-orientated signal into the world of culture.

In addition the City of Salzburg is a modern congress and business centre that lends itself as an international meeting point, not least because of its central geographic location. The city is easy and quick to reach and offers international companies not only professional infrastructure but the added attraction of the charm of a city with a very special atmosphere.
