For over 150 years the Mohrenwirt has stood in the centre of Fuschl am See in the magical Salzkammergut Lake District. It was the great-great-great-grandmother of the current proprietor, Jakob Schmidlechner III, who gave the local village inn its name “Mohrenwirt”. Inns and restaurants were often named after saints and holy figures and in this case Caspar, one of the Three Wise Men served as an inspiration for the hotel’s name. In those days the name “Mohr” was given to persons of African or Asian origin and the bust of an African man has remained the hotel’s emblem for one and a half centuries. We have continued to use the name “Mohrenwirt” because, what we are and would like to continue to be, is a homely hotel and restaurant where locals and guests from all over the world feel equally at home. The Mohrenwirt plays a central part in village life, it is a popular venue for weddings, christenings and local association get-togethers – The Mohrenwirt remains a popular meeting point in Fuschl.

Where cooking is concerned the Mohrenwirt is very conscious of its roots, however this is combined with the joy of experimentation and modern cooking techniques and recipes. The right choice of wine to compliment a good meal can round off a dinner perfectly. There are no hard and fast rules – your taste-buds decide! Guests choosing their meal from the Mohrenwirt menu can rely on the good recommendations of the proprietor. In addition, we always check our wine cellar and recommend the ideal wine to go with your halfboard dinner. A schnapps or liqueur from our spirit trolley is the perfect end to a perfect meal!
